Loving News of the Week
Today in Loving we all learned to get survive the arctic cold with no heat or water. Until today, we had been lucky. Most had power. All had water. Tonight the situation has turned for the worse with more winter precipitation to come. The county has opened the high school gymnasium as a warming station for folks that need to get out of the cold. No water or food, but a generator is keeping the place warm for as long as Coach Turner can find the gas to keep it going.
Sheriff Sanders and his staff report seven car accidents around the county including a five car pile up at the stop sign at the east end of the courthouse square. Myrna Merriweather and her Scrabble club were out seeing the local sights covered in snow when she slid into the back of a city gravel truck. The rest of the Scrabble players —in three trailing cars—then slid into her rear end—the car’s rear end not Myrna’s. Other than some scrapes and bruises the ladies are all fine. Mrs. Merriweather says they will all meet at her place next Wednesday as usual. The Sheriff is asking folks to stay home and off the roads. It’s just not safe out there. In case of emergency call an ambulance or the sheriff’s office. Don’t drive yourself.
Sam Nelson at the water district reports that power outages have prevented the restoration of water to residents. He says he and his crews are doing all they can, but can’t say for sure when to expect running water in homes. He recommends that everybody walk their properties looking leaks. If you need help shutting off your water at the source, call the water district and they will get someone out to you.
Update on the power situation is not available because Oncor and Centerpoint Energy are not answering their phones.
It seems that we are all on our own folks, so let’s do what we can for ourselves and for each other. More updates will follow.
