Loving News of the Week March 8, 2021

Spring is on its way to East Texas. I know this not just because the calendar says so, or because the weather is warming, or because folks are trading in their jeans for shorts. I know this because the Snow Cone Shack is back!

Nothing says spring and summer quite like a cup of ice soaked in flavored syrup. I look forward to this rite of warmer weather every year. Since I grew up in the upper Midwest, I did not know the joy of the snow cone until I moved to Loving. But, now that I am properly initiated, I cannot imagine anything finer than that paper cup of pure sugar joy.

Scott and Becky Thomas started the Snow Cone Shack more than a decade ago as a side gig to supplement their income as teachers at Loving High. Every year when spring break officially arrives, Scott picks up the Shack’s trailer from storage and parks it out in front of Lewis Brothers grocery. Scott and Becky hire Loving High’s most amiable and extroverted students as snow cone builders, and the community stands in line for however long it takes to get that first cone of the season. I got mine yesterday. Large. Half strawberry and half lime flavored. Made expertly by Becky herself. Very satisfying.

In other news, Loving High’s theatre department earned rave reviews for their one act production of I Never Saw Another Butterfly. Not a dry eye in the house when they were finished. One Act play district competition is next Friday in Harperville. Break a leg to the cast and crew.

Finally, Sheriff Sanders is asking the public for help identifying the culprits who knocked over some tombstones and left a mess of beer cans at the Oddfellows cemetery last weekend. The families of those whose markers were overturned and the county maintenance workers who did the clean up would like to know who is responsible. Contact the Sherriff’s office with information and tips.
